Baby Jogger City Select Stroller Review

city_select33

Baby Jogger City Select is an award-winning luxury stroller that became very popular because of its ability to TRANSFORM from a single stroller into a double with the addition of a bassinet, car seat adapter, or additional seat.

With the second seat, it has 16 different combinations of the seating arrangement. How great is that! It also has great features like a large canopy, an adjustable handlebar, and a huge storage basket. It is a sleek stroller that looks very modern and innovative.

There are not many INLINE double strollers that can transform from single into double mode. Most of the double stroller have both seats side-by-side making them very wide and hard to get around things.

Try getting down shopping aisles or between parked cars with a side-by-side stroller! You will need to go around the whole parking lot to get to your car.

This is NOT a jogging stroller despite being made by Baby Jogger. I think the name confuses a lot of people and they think it’s a jogging stroller. It’s designed for everyday use like going to the park, strolling along the neighborhood, or going to the shopping mall.

It glides along with very little effort, especially in a single mode, and is truly a one-hand stroller. It is a little heavy at 28 lbs in a single mode and 34 lbs in a double mode.

If you are planning to have a second child, it’s a great stroller to get because you can just add a second seat instead of buying another stroller. But, for one child I would get something like City Mini because it’s lighter (only 16 lbs) and is MUCH cheaper (around $250). You can basically get TWO City Minis for the price of one City Select. Just IMHO.

OVERALL

I gave it 5 out of 5 stars because it’s a great option for parents who are planning on having a second child. It is a little heavy and there is no automatic lock, but other than that it’s really a great stroller.

After being released in 2010, it instantly became a hit and was on the back order for months and months. Luckily, it is widely available now and can be purchased for around $449 – $529.

The price does vary depending on the color. If you want to get a pram or a second seat, you will need to purchase those items separately.

Features

CANOPY

It has a large three-section canopy that will protect your child from sunlight.  It has a large peekaboo window with magnetic closure (which I like a lot).

HANDLEBAR

The Select model has a telescoping handlebar, meaning you can pull it up. It goes from 38.5″ up to 41.5″ from the ground. The adjustable handlebar is important for me because my husband is very tall and always needs to raise it up.

SEAT

The seat looks small, but it is actually 12″ wide and 21″ high from the back of the seat to the top of the canopy. Also, you can adjust the canopy to get 3 MORE inches at the top, so it is 24″ high from the back of the seat to the top of the canopy.

The seat is smaller than City Mini, but it is still very roomy. It has a one-hand lever recline. The seat is one molded piece, so when you recline it, the whole seat will recline keeping its “v” shape. It does NOT get completely flat.

This seat is recommended from 6 months and up to 45 lbs per seat. If you want to use it for a newborn, you will need to get a bassinet or car seat adapter. This seat is reversible, meaning you can flip it so your baby is facing you or the world. It reclines the same way if reversed.

The seat is very easy to clean. You can take off the fabric and machine wash it in cold water with mild detergent. Easy!

To dry it, just reattach it to the frame and let it air dry. Do NOT use a dryer to avoid shrinkage. The only thing I don’t like is that the material is a little rough and scratchy.

There is a medium size pocket located on the back of the seat. You can use it for small items like phone, keys, and wallets. It comes very useful since there is NO parent console nor a cup holder included.

HARNESS

As with all modern strollers, it has a 5-point padded harness.

SECOND SEAT

The main reason why this stroller became so popular is the ability to convert from a single into a double mode. Having a second child? No problem. Just add a second seat (sold separately). You can also use a car seat or a pram for a newborn.

It is amazing how easy it is to do!  It is done in three easy steps. 1) Remove the covers from both sides above the front wheels 2) Insert two adapters into the openings above the front wheels 3) Slide in a second seat, car seat, or a pram. That’s it!

city_select24

There are 16 different seat combinations to fit your child’s needs. You can have a main seat and a car seat or a main seat and a pram or two seats. The kids can be facing each other when they are in a good mood, or look opposite ways when they are cranky.

Now, you can purchase second-seat adapters separately. Yey! It was one of the biggest complaints from parents because before adapters were sold with the second seat only. Now you can get it for around $20.

FOOTREST

It is adjustable. Yes! I love adjustable footrests. It is just much more comfortable for smaller babies. It has 4 different positions.

city_select5

BASKET

I absolutely love this basket. It is HUGE! You can get into it from every angle. Even from the front. It has two zippers on both sides in the back of the basket that once you unzip make it even BIGGER!

Fitting two large diaper bags will not be a problem. You can go grocery shopping with this basket and fit a lot of items. I don’t know why couldn’t they do the same basket on City Mini.

WHEELS

The City Select is a 4-wheel model with two lightweight 8″ wheels in the front and 12″ wheels in the back. It has all forever-air tires meaning they will never go flat because they are filled with lightweight foam instead of air. The front wheels are swivel but can be locked straight for tougher terrain.

BRAKE

It has a hand brake that is located on the side of the handlebar. I like hand brakes much more because it doesn’t scratch my shoes unless I try to use my feet instead of my hand. LOL.

FOLD/UNFOLD

Like all Baby Jogger strollers, the Select model has an easy fold, but you do have to use both hands. I was not impressed… I guess we all got spoiled with City Mini one-hand one-step fold so I was expecting the same here.

It also doesn’t stand on its own once folded and doesn’t have an automatic lock, so you will need to lock it manually. Since the seat is one molded piece, the back of the seat doesn’t fold with the stroller taking a lot of room.

To make it more compact, you should take the seat off the stroller. It is worth mentioning that you CAN fold the stroller with both seats attached, but it will take up all of the space of your trunk and is much heavier to lift (it weighs 34 lb with both seats on).

It is easier to take the seats off. Without the seat, the folded dimensions are 33″L x 26″W x 12.5″H. With the seat on, it is 42″L x 26″W x 12.5″H.

Even in double mode, this stroller has great stability and even with one of the seats empty, it will not flip over.  If you add a second child, it is best to put the heavier child closer to you.

Cons

-Weight. With a single seat, this stroller weighs 28 lbs. Heavy! If you add a second seat, the weight increases to 34 lbs. Very heavy! I’ve been having back problems since I had my daughter, therefore I am trying to lift as little as possible. Of course, with all those car seats, diaper bags, and strollers it’s almost impossible.

So, the stroller’s weight is one of the most important factors to me. I personally would NOT get this stroller just for one child. I think there are a lot of other great strollers with tons of the same features that weigh and cost less.

But for two kids, it’s at the top of my list. This stroller has to weigh a little more to keep its stability when you add a second seat, otherwise, it will flip over.

-No automatic lock. Having an automatic lock would save a step, but it’s not a deal breaker for me. I hope Baby Jogger will add it to the next upgrade.

-Seat material. It is very durable and easy to clean, but a little scratchy. For the money you are paying, I would expect to have an upgraded material like on Bumbleride. I would prefer more ‘plush’ material that is more comfortable, especially for small babies.

  1. Hi ! I am trying to find a rain cover for the city select. The rain cover that is sold for the seat doesn’t have a small peakaboo window also I have read in many reviews that the rain cover doesn’t attach to the seat and is loose. I would really like a rain cover that would fit perfectly into the seat and has a window for quick access to my baby. Something similar to the rain cover for the bugaboo cameleon. I was thinking about getting there rain cover but unfortunately the city select seat is slightly bigger.
    Hope you can help me!

  2. How about this stroller bring sold without the fact the car seat adapters were not to be had. Rendering the user of how it was planned to be used impossible. And this was known by baby jogger who pulled all the old adapters prior to new ones being available. Retailer did not disclose. Losing months of use. Back ordered till July 2016. Wish we never bought
