Mamas & Papas Sola2 MTX Stroller Review

sola2-mtx-stroller1

Recently Mamas & Papas have added a lot of new strollers to their stroller line. The Sola2 MTX is one of their newest models which is an upgraded version of the Sola2.

It’s a luxury reversible seat stroller with all-terrain wheels that is designed for indoor and outdoor activities. The air-filled rear tires together with all-wheel suspension provide amazing maneuverability and a very smooth ride. You can easily push it with one hand even fully loaded.

If you want to have ONLY one stroller, Sola2 MTX would be a great choice. It will last you from birth and up to 50 lbs. You can turn it into a travel system by replacing the seat with an infant car seat or a stylish pram by replacing it with a bassinet.

I like it when strollers have a bassinet option because you don’t want your child to spend too much time in the car seat. It also offers another place to sleep at home.

This buggy also features an adjustable leg rest, adjustable 5-point harness, adjustable handle bar, large easy-to-access basket, huge canopy, deep one-hand recline suitable for a newborn, mesh panel for better airflow, automatic lock, standing fold, and flip-flop-friendly brake.

I was pleasantly surprised that despite all the great features and large all-terrain wheels it still weighs ONLY 22 lbs. This is probably the LIGHTEST all-terrain reversible seat stroller on the market!

I also want to mention how compact it is when folded. It even wins when compared to its main competitor Nuna Mixx which is one of the most compact strollers on the market.

Another big competitor that is probably feeling the pressure is the Bugaboo Cameleon 3. While it does have large 12″ rear all-terrain wheels, the fold is bulkier, the canopy has no peekaboo and no mesh, the seat is one molded piece and doesn’t offer space to stretch, and the price is much higher ($880-$990). For the price of one Cameleon 3, you can get two Sola2 MTX :)

I have Sola2 MTX 5 out of 5 stars because this is an amazing stroller full of luxury features that could be your ONLY stroller. The large rear wheels make it great for indoor and outdoor adventures. I also like the low price of only $479.

Features

CANOPY

Like all other Mamas&Papas models, Sola2 MTX has a very generous two-panel canopy with a large sunvisor that will provide your child with full sun protection. There is a large peekaboo window made out of clear plastic with a magnetic closure.

No noisy Velcro! There is also a mesh zipped-in panel for better airflow on a hot summer day. You can use that mesh panel as a second peekaboo window to look at your sweet pea.

HANDLEBAR

The handle bar goes from 38″ all the way up to 41″ from the ground. The handlebar is covered with nice foam. There is a run-away strap attached to the middle of the bumper bar for extra safety.

sola2-mtx-stroller2

SEAT

I like how roomy the seat is compared to other reversible seats. It is 13″ wide with a 21″ seat back and a measurement of 24″ from the back of the seat to the top of the canopy.

This is a tall seat back with plenty of headroom for a tall child. Your four-year-old should have no problem fitting in.

The seat has a very deep recline that goes to an almost flat position suitable for a newborn. It is a one-hand lever recline that is much more convenient than a strap system.

It has the same recline positions in parent-facing mode. The seat can accommodate a child from birth and up to 50 lbs.

BUMPER BAR

The bumper bar is swing-away and can be quickly removed for easy cleaning. I like that it’s covered with fabric instead of foam. The first thing those little cuties will do when you put them into the stroller is go for the bumper bar with their little teeth.

They have to taste it at least once to make sure they are not missing out on anything. And if it’s foam they will be chewing on it all the time. LOL.

sola2-mtx-stroller7

HARNESS

It has a padded adjustable 5-point harness with a center release buckle that is not too hard to undo.

sola2-mtx-stroller9

LEGREST

The leg rest can be easily adjusted with a push of a finger. Just push it up with your hand and stop when you like the position. Smaller babies will be able to stretch their little legs.

If you fully recline the seat and bring the leg rest up, your child will have plenty of room to stretch and take a long nap. Also great for quick diaper changes on the fly!

sola2-mtx-stroller11

BASKET

While the basket is not very deep, it is large and easy to access. I had no problem fitting in my large diaper bag. The uniquely shaped basket helps to save some space allowing for a more compact fold.

sola2-mtx-stroller8

WHEELS

It rolls on four wheels with two 10″ air-filled tires in the back and 7.5″ hard rubber tires in the front. The front wheels are swivel but can be locked straight for rougher terrain. Because rear wheels are air-filled this buggy can handle all kinds of terrain.

Of course, it’s not as all-terrain as a jogger would be, but it does very well off-road and on bumpy streets. If you are planning on taking long walks in the park with a newborn, this would be a perfect stroller for you.

It has great maneuverability and is easy to push with one hand even when fully loaded. The all-wheel suspension helps to absorb the bumps providing your child with a smooth ride.

sola2-mtx-stroller14
sola2-mtx-stroller13

Since the rear wheels are air-filled they will need occasional maintenance. It’s really not a big deal. Use an included pump to add some air when needed.

BRAKE

No more shoe scratches! Simply step on the red part of the brake to lock both rear wheels or step on the black part to unlock it.

sola2-mtx-stroller17

FOLD/UNFOLD

The fold is very easy, but you will need both hands. You can even fold it with the seat attached as long as it’s facing forward. It folds into a very compact package for an all-terrain stroller.

There is an automatic lock and if you put the handlebar in the right position, you can get a standing fold.

The only thing I don’t like is that the handlebar might get dirty from touching the ground. It has folding dimensions of 13″H x 24″ W x 33″L which is even more compact than its biggest competitor Nuna Mixx which has folding dimensions of 18.6″H x 23.2″W x 35.5″L. This buggy should fit in any trunk with no problem.

sola2-mtx-stroller3

TRAVEL SYSTEM

You can easily turn it into a travel system by replacing the seat with an infant car seat. Using only the frame of the stroller makes it much lighter and easier to get it in and out of the car.

And since you will be removing the stroller seat, the car seat doesn’t need to match. Because Mamas&Papas don’t make their own car seat, you can pair it with one of the popular car seats like:

  • Cybex Aton/Aton2/Aton Q
  • Graco Snugride 35
  • Primo Viaggio IP & SL
  • Maxi Cosi Citi/Pebble/Cabriofix/Mico/Prezi
  • Nuna Pipa
sola2-mtx-stroller10

BASSINET

You can turn Sola2 MTX into a beautiful pram by replacing the seat of the stroller with a bassinet. The bassinet option is always a big plus because you can take a long walk or go visit your friends without concerns about your child spending too much time in the car seat. BTW, doctors don’t recommend for the newborn to be in the car seat for more than 2 hours in a row.

I am absolutely in love with this bassinet! It’s high quality, stylish, and full of great features. The built-in recline will ensure your baby is comfortable in the lie-flat position and is great for babies with an acid reflex that needs a little elevation.

You can lift the recline up a little putting your baby in an ergonomic position for better spine development.

Just like the stroller canopy, there is a hidden ventilation panel in the bassinet canopy that will provide your child with better airflow. The central handlebar makes it easy to transport in and out of the house. There is even a toy loop to keep your baby entertained.

I also like the way it’s built. Instead of being saggy and wrinkly like many other bassinets on the market, it keeps its nice shape. It can accommodate a child from birth and up to 20 lbs. You can get it on Amazon for only $220.

sola2-mtx-stroller15
sola2-mtx-stroller16

Cons

-Seat position for the fold. If you want to fold the stroller with the seat attached, it has to be in the forward-facing position. It is a pain in the behind to flip the seat every time.

-Puzzle piece buckle. The buckle is a little annoying, but not a big deal after you get used to it. I stopped shoulder pads once my daughter started to walk and now that she is 2.5 years old I don’t use a harness at all. That’s where the bumper bar gets very handy :)

  1. Thank you for the excellent reviews! I would love your advice on choosing between the Sola 2 MTX, Armadillo Flip XT, and Nuna Mixx. We have a suburban lifestyle with older kids going to soccer games/etc, so we need something that can handle some terrain. Nothing seems ‘perfect’ though: missing bumper bar on Armadillo Flip XT, excellent tires but foam handlebar and forward-facing fold on Sola 2 MTX, and added weight with no bassinet option for Mixx. I do not want the baby to be in the car seat for extended periods of time, but do I need a bassinet? Would any of these seats in the lay-flat position work for an infant? Maybe with an additional insert? What would be your choice?

  2. Hi Cynthia. You can definitely use a seat of the stroller for a newborn as long as the recline is flat and you use infant insert for additional support. It’s nice to have a bassinet option because you can use it as an extra sleeping place at home and when you visit friends and family. Since you have top rated strollers on your list, it’s hard to choose between them. They all have pretty compact fold and good size wheels. Do you think you want to get a bassinet? If you do, than I would choose between Flip XT and Sola2 MTX. I also just posted review on Valco Baby Snap Ultra which has a bassinet option, good size wheels and weighs only 19 lbs! I know I am not making it any easier. LOL.

  3. Hi Katrin,
I am down to the Flip XT and the Sola2 MTX… What would be your deciding factors in choosing between these two strollers?
    Thank you!

  4. Hi Cynthia. For me it would be tween the compact fold of the Flip vs bumper bar of the Sola2 MTX. The lack of bumper bar and snack tray is the only drawback for me in the Flip XT. Other than that, I think that Flip XT is a perfection!

  5. Hi Katrin, thank you so much for doing this review! Every since you suggestion the mtx2 to me I have been wavering between it and the Mixx. Wanted to double check though because the mamas and papas site wasn’t clear- does the sola mtx2 adapter for graco work with both the snugride Classic connect and Click connect? I’m getting the latter and wanted to be sure!

  6. Hi Katrin,
Thanks for all the great information. I’m still trying to decide between the Flip XT and the sola 2 MTX. Do you know what kind of tires the Flip XT has? Is it also all terrain?
    Thanks!

  7. Hi Alex. The tires on Flip XT are not all-terrain but very close. If you are planning on tackling snow or going off road a lot, I would get Sola 2 MTX. If it’s just once in while, Flip XT should handle things great. Keep in mind that Flip XT has all-wheel suspension that helps to provide a smooth ride.

  8. Hi Lindsay. I think you should contact M&P directly because sometimes they just forget to post the right specs. This happened before. Their site is not the best.

  9. Hi Katrin,

If you had to pick just 1 stroller that is compatible with the Cybex Aton Q infant car seat what would it be? We are looking for a stroller that has good ventilation and large canopy (we live in South Texas – it gets hot), all-terrain wheels (for parks-trails, and city shopping), folds easily and is lightweight for travel, and will last to at least a 50 lb weight. I plan on using just the car seat in the stroller base until he is 9-12 months old (no bassinet needed).
I have read through all of your reviews, but tend to get overwhelmed with all the great options.
Hope this isn’t too tall of an order for any suggestions you might have for us! :)

    Thanks for your time,
    Elizabeth

  10. Great reviews. We are looking for our first stroller. We’re trying to decide between the Stokke V2 Scoot and the Sola 2 MTX. We have a small gravel foot trail that we walk regularly and not sure if the Stokke would be sufficient. Which of the two would you recommend?

  11. Hi KJ. I like Sola2 MTX better because it has a better recline, better canopy, and better leg rest. I think that the seat on Sola2 MTX is much more comfortable for a child than on Scoot.

  12. Hi Katrin,

Thank you so much for the detailed information! May I ask what’s the key difference between Sola2 & Sola2 MTX? Only the wheels?

    Cheers

  13. Hi Katrin
I am expecting my first child in November. Your site has been such a great help. I would like the stroller to last from infancy to toddler years. I feel my main concerns are that it be light weight, an easy fold, reversible seat, peek a boo window, large easy to reach storage basket, bumper bar, and it can be used easily with a car seat. I keep coming back to the Sola2 Mtx. My only concerns are the wheels need air to be added and it can’t fold unless it’s in the front position. I also like the price, I really don’t want to spend too much. Do you think this can be my only stroller from infancy through toddler years? Do you think my concerns are a big deal or is there something you feel is a better fit for me? Also which car seat do you feel is the best that it’s compatible with? I wanted a car seat that will last from infancy through toddler years. Thank you! I will most likely use the stroller for walks in the park and shopping. I live in a suburban area, so no mass transit.

  14. Hi! I’ve been pouring over reviews, videos and info on strollers. We’re having our first baby in November and are considering a reversible seat single stroller that would be good for a chip and seal road (not paved but not quite gravel road), a paved bike trail, and normal park use/errands. I am considering the Uppababy cruz, the baby jogger city versa (2013 model and I’d buy the gt wheel kit–would you even consider this stroller because it’s discontinued?), and the Mama and Papas Sola2 mtx, along with the valco baby snap ultra. Any suggestions? Thank you so much!

  15. Love your site, really tossed between the urbo2 and sola2. Are the wheels on the sola2 any better then the urbo2 for bumpy sidewalk?

  18. Our third child is outgrowing her infant car seat/snap n’ go configuration. We live in Europe and travel a lot so I’m considering the Flip XT, the Nuna Mixx, and the Sola 2 MTX because they’re easier to fold and cart around. We also hike and take trails occasionally so tires that can handle that terrain would be nice too. My only concern is how upright the seats go. I’ve read reviews highlighting the recline of all these seats but there is no mention of how upright the seat is. Do you know which seat is the most upright?

  19. Have you really tried all of these strollers?! I have been reviewing and changing my mind about my stroller needs all pregnancy.. And am still up in the air. I like a stroller I have the ability to play with in a store and most recently I really like the Uppababy Cruz 2015 and Mesa car seat :light, wheels and suspension, storage all in one.. The Mesa is super easy with the frame! But I was also considering sola mtx but I can’t play with this one … What would you say the major difference in the 2? And I’m looking for an all in one .. We live in Brick streets but do have sidewalks.

Ty for your advice and opinion on comparing these 2.

  20. Hi, Katrin. I received the Sola 2 MTX last week and used it on our vacation. I like it but I’m a bit disappointed in its performance. Their video shows the stroller goes on sand at a beach, but we couldn’t make it move on the sand at all. The ride is bumpier and the whole frame feels flimsier than expected. Love the seat and the basket. So, I’m thinking about returning it and getting a Bumbleride Indie 4 instead. Would Indie 4 be smoother ride and sturdier? Which one would you pick as your all terrain everyday stroller? My son is almost 4 months old and we have a Chicco Caddy and a Baby Jogger Vue Lite, who’s I love, already. Thanks!

  21. Hi Maya. Not all-terrain are the same. Some have much more durable wheels than others. Indie 4 and Indie both do great on the sand and snow. We just went to the beach a week ago with our Indie (3-wheels) and it was great. I fully loaded the stroller with all of our beach stuff and pulled it behind me on the sand. Easy! It was also great to walk down the boardwalk in the evening. I am a little surprised to hear about flimsiness of the frame on Sola2 MTX. I am thinking it might be a bad stroller because when I tested it, it was very solid and sturdy.

  22. Hi Kris. I know I am a stroller addict! Haha! Luckily I didn’t have to buy all of them in order to test them. I am part of a big mom’s club so I can borrow one. The main difference between Sola2 MTX and Curz 2015 are the wheels. Sola has larger all-terrain wheels. The recline on Sola is also better because it’s a flat recline suitable for a newborn. The basket is better on Cruz. The Sola is also a little more compact once folded. Both are great strollers. I think Cruz and Mesa will work beautifully. I really like the look of Cruz more than Sola to tell you the truth. It’s a hard decision.

  23. Thank you for the super quick reply, Katrin!
Looks like the hot leathery handle and bumper bar part of my comment got erased or edited out, but I think it could be a real safety concern. Have you heard anything about it from other people? Also my other concerns are Mamas & Papas customer service and their strollers’ resale value. They have bad reputations for their customer service and since it’s a British company, getting a hold of replacement parts (if needed) can be difficult in the US and the stroller’s resale value is lower than other US brands? Sorry, these questions are not about the stroller’s functionality, but I want to get as much information as possible before sending the Sola back and going on another stroller hunt… I should’ve thought about these before I purchased the Sola, I know :(

  24. Hi Katrin,

Thank you for all your great reviews! I’ve found them very helpful in finding the perfect stroller for my first baby. I’m stuck now trying to make my final decision. The thing that is most important to me is that the seat not be a molded seat (like Uppa Baby Vista). I also really want a bassinet. While the Mixx doesn’t have the bassinet I really like everything about it and plan on getting the Nuna Pipa infant carrier as well. So I’m trying to decide between the Mixx and the Sola 2 (MTX?). The problem is there are no stores that I can find that have the Sola 2 in order to see in person. They all have the Armadillo line and the Urbo 2. Is this becuase the Sola 2 is so new? I really like the Armadillo Flip XT but no bumper bar is a turn off for me. My big concern with not seeing the Sola 2 in person is the basket. After seeing the Peg Perego Book Pop up in person I almost decided on this one until I noticed how flimsy the basket was and with a light bag in it was practically dragging on the ground. The Nuna Mixx basket is much sturdier. I think the Sola 2 basket is smaller but still a decent size, right? How it the quality of it, is it sturdy like the Mixx? Also, the difference between Sola 2 and Sola 2 MTX is tires and colors? Does the Sola 2 have the same mesh section in the canopy? Is the bassinet for the Sola 2 comparable to the Peg Perego Bassinet? What would you choose between the Mixx and the Sola 2?

Thanks for all your help! I’ve been driving myself crazy to make a decision!
    Christine

  25. Hi Christine. If you want a bassinet, I would go with Sola 2 MTX. The basket on Sola 2 MTX is a good size, but not as deep as on Mixx. Sola 2 does NOT have a mesh in the canopy. The Sola 2 MTX is very sturdy high quality stroller that can be your only stroller. Also, it weighs only 22 lbs which is super light for all-terrain stroller with the reversible seat. I really like the quality of the bassinet that comes with Sola 2 MTX.

  26. Hi, I can not decide whether to get Sola2 MTX or Armadillo flip XT. Is Sola 2MTX suitable from the birth? Do I need to get any insert for newborn? Also is the canopy of stroller SPF protected?
    thank you

  27. Hi Katrin,

What are the differences between sola 2 and sola 2 mtx? It’s slightly cheaper since it’s an older model and just wanted to know if sola 2 is just as good if the tires are the only main upgrades.

  28. I love this stroller but I don’t like the seat position for the fold. any alternatives you recommend that is in the same class??
    Thanks!!

  29. Hi Katrin,
I purchased the Sola2 MTX stroller. I saw your comment regarding the infant insert and had a few questions. Do you think one is necessary for me to use the stroller from birth? If so, is there a particular insert you would recommend?
    Thank you.

  30. Lindsay,

Did you contact M&P about this? I am wondering the same thing. I have a Graco 35 LX Snugride Click Connect and am trying to find a compatible stroller. Let me know! Thank you!

  31. Hello,

Really appreciate your reviews . I have done so much research on strollers my head is spinning, I originally looked at the mima xari and then bugaboo cameleon because of style and cameleon more for features, but I am a first time mum and everyone is telling me to be more frugal with how I am spending for my baby girl. It is very important to me that I can get back to walking the trails so I’ve been looking more towards a stylish, lightweight all terrain option. I was almost decided on the armadillo flip xt but then saw it wasn’t all terrain and wonder how it would hold up with me trying to lose my pregnancy weight. Now I am torn between the Sola 2 MXT and Valco snap . Sorry if this was long winded what one would you recommend canopy , wheel durability ,

    Thanks

    Danielle

  32. Hi Katrin,

I am a first time mom-to-be and have been researching strollers for a few months now. Thanks to your amazing reviews, we have been able to narrow our choices down to two different models: the Nuna Mixx and the Mamas and Papas Sola2 MTX. My husband and I live in a small apartment on the second floor, so space is a deciding factor for us. We don’t want a stroller that requires a bassinet in order to be able to use it for an infant. This is one of the reasons we love the fully reclinable seats on both of these strollers. I should also mention that there is no elevator in our building, thus our stroller will be stored in the trunk of our car when it’s not in use. We love the sleek look of both strollers and will be using the Nuna Pipa car seat to create a travel system with either stroller frame.

I did test drive the Nuna Mixx once. I found it to be easily maneuverable, but was concerned about the handlebar — it felt a little wobbly to me. I have not been able to find a local retailer for the Sola2 MTX, and I worry about purchasing it online and having to deal with pesky shipping and returns if we don’t like it.

Do you have any feedback that might help me make the final decision? Your input is very much appreciated!

    Warmly,

    Simone

  33. This is very good stroller. I did lot if research and bought this one. My baby is taller than average and the stroller is nice and spacious. It is also very strong and good for different terrains (park etc.) many crying nights i’d just put him in the stroller till he sleeps and leave him there till the morning. He was perfectly happy with it. Wheels are amazing for bumpy roads. It is perfect to use from birth on, no need for basinet, just put a liner on the seat, make it flat and you are good to go. The only drawback is that it cannot be folded with one hand, in case you are alone you’d have to ask someone to help you or leave baby somewhere to fold it and it has to be picked with both hands if you have to put it in the car or so… Or you can put baby in carrier and do this. Despite these drawbacks if i had to choose again i’d buy the same one!! It’s amazing stroller!!

  34. Hi Senka,
I also purchased this stroller and am excited to start using it once my baby is born in a few weeks. Is there a particular seat liner you’d recommend? I’ve read mixed opinions regarding whether one is needed or not, but I’d like to be prepared.
    Thanks,
    Yelena

  35. FTM mom here and trying to find a reversible seat stroller (all terrain and light) that can be are one and only. I really like the Valco Snap Ultra, but I have read some reviews that it is on the small size. One mom posted a photo of her 2.5 yr old almost being too big for it. Suggestions? I like this Sola 2 MTX, but it’s heavier than the Snap…but it comes with all terrain tires, we don’t have to buy them on top of the stroller. Any suggestions would be helpful.

  36. Hi Karra. I like Sola 2 MTX more because it’s more stylish. The Valco Snap will be heavier than 19 lbs once you get all-terrain wheels.

  37. Hi Katrin,

I’m trying to find a snack tray that will hook onto sola2 mtx . Do I have idea on which one would work

    Thanks
    Uby

  38. Hi Katrin

I’m trying to find a snack tray that would hook onto sola 2 mtx

Any idea which one would work

    Thanks
    Ruby

  39. Hello,
I am interested in purchasing the Sola2 for our first baby and hoping that you can provide some info about car seat compatibility and which accessories/adapters are needed? I am finding a lot of confusing information online and would love one expert opinion!!

    Thank you!

  40. I’m torn between this and the Nuna Jet Collection. I really like that the Nuna bassinet can be used for overnight sleeping. Do you know if the the Mamas & Papas Solar2 bassinet can be used for overnight sleeping as well?

  41. Hi Sonia,
I have a Sola 2 MTX stroller and used the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 Infant Car Seat with the stroller. It was easy to attach and worked awesome. I highly recommend the combination. I purchased the adaptors on Amazon.

  42. Hi Ruby,
I have the Sola 2 MTX. It comes with a “belly bar” and I just attached a snack cup to the bar. It works well and is easy to remove for cleaning/refilling.
