Baby Jogger City Select LUX Stroller Review

city-select-lux1

The Baby Jogger City Select Lux is an updated version of the beloved City Select. As you probably know, City Select has been one of the best-selling strollers for a while.

Parents love its ability to grow with the family converting from a single into a double inline mode or even a triple mode with the addition of a stroller board.

Needless to say, I was super excited to see the new Lux model. Let me tell you, it’s amazing! This year, the City Select got a complete facelift eliminating all of its drawbacks. Is it a perfect stroller now? It just might be. Let’s take a look.

The City Select Lux is a reversible seat stroller with 20 seat combinations (instead of 16) and the ability to take two infant car seats, two full-size seats, or two bassinets. You can even transport three kids by adding a stroller board. There is also a new jump seat that you can use instead of the main seat for your older child. It turns Lux into a sit-n-stand type of stroller adding 4 more seating arrangements.

The fold is easier and more compact compared to the previous one. I like how the seat folds in half protecting the inside of the seat from dirt and damage. Before, it was exposed collecting all the dust. You can fold the stroller with both seats attached. And, they’ve added an automatic lock!

The added all-wheel suspension provides a smooth ride. The handlebar extends about 1″ higher giving tall parents ample leg room. The rear wheels are slightly larger and have a new design.

The new fabric feels much softer and more expensive to the touch instead of nylony scratchy fabric they’ve used before. Honestly, it feels like they read my review on City Select and fixed everything on my cons list. This is a BIG competition for the Britax B-Ready and UPPAbaby Vista.

Just like the old model Lux features: a large canopy, a mesh peekaboo window with magnetic closure, an adjustable handlebar, a large basket, large all-terrain wheels, and a hand brake. Keep in mind, this is NOT a jogging stroller despite being made by Baby Jogger.

The Baby Jogger is just the name of the company. This model is designed for everyday use like going to the park, walking around the city, and running errands. It can handle a bunch of different terrains like grass, mulch, or uneven pavement. It comes in four different colors and can be purchased for around $629.

Features

CANOPY

It features a large three-panel UV 50+ canopy that goes down to the bumper bar providing great sun protection. The bumper bar can be purchased separately. The large peekaboo window is made out of dark mesh which improves air circulation while still offering sun protection.

The magnetic closure on the peekaboo window (instead of a noisy Velcro) will stay open thanks to the additional magnet at the end of the canopy.

HANDLEBAR

It has an adjustable telescoping handlebar, meaning you can pull it up. It goes from 38.5″ up to 42.5″ from the ground offering plenty of leg room for taller parents. This is 1″ more than a previous model.

The shape of the handlebar is a little bit more squire now, but it’s still covered with rubber. While the rubber cover might not be as nice to the touch as foam, it is more durable and easier to clean.

SEAT

The seat stayed the same size. It is 12″ wide with an 18″ seat back and a 21″ from the back of the seat to the top of the canopy. Also, you can adjust the canopy at the top to get 3 MORE inches up to 24″. The seat is smaller than City Mini, but it is still very roomy.

It has a one-hand lever recline that is very deep but does NOT have a flat position so it’s recommended from 6 months and up to 45 lbs. Keep in mind, that it does keep a ‘v’ shape when you recline it so your child will always have his knees bent.

If you want to use it for a newborn, you will need to get a bassinet or an infant car seat. This seat is reversible, meaning the baby can face you or the world. It has the same recline positions in both modes.

The fabric has been updated and is much more softer and lush than on an old City Select.

HARNESS

Like all modern strollers, it has an adjustable 5-point padded harness with a center release buckle.

There is a medium size pocket located on the back of the seat. You can use it for small items like phone, keys, and wallet. It comes very useful since there is NO parent console nor a cup holder included.

SECOND SEAT

The main reason why this stroller became so popular is its ability to convert from a single into a double mode. Having a second child? No problem. Just add a second seat (sold separately). You can also use it with a car seat or a pram for a newborn.

For this year, there are 20 different seat combinations (instead of 16) to fit your child’s needs. It can be used with two main seats, two bassinets, two infant car seats, or with a new jump seat.

The kids can be facing each other when they are in a good mood, or look opposite ways when they are cranky.

The adapters for the second seat got a little upgrade. Before, you had two holes in the frame which you had to cover when not used. Now, the covers are built into the frame which gives it a much sleeker look and it’s much easier to get the adapters in and out.

FOOTRESTS

The adjustable footrest is 9.25″ and has four different positions. It’s great when you can lift up the footrest and provide your little baby with more room to stretch their little legs.

BASKET

I absolutely love this basket. It is HUGE and easily accessible from every angle. It has two zippers in the back that you can unzip to make it even larger. Fitting two large diaper bags will not be a problem.

The great news is that in the double mode, the second seat goes to the front of the stroller so you still have a large basket for your stuff. Unlike some other strollers like Britax B-Ready where the second seat gets attached ONLY to the back of the stroller with the child’s legs taking up all the room in the basket.

WHEELS

The wheels are only slightly larger in the back. I don’t have exact dimensions right now, but they looked a little larger in comparison to the old model. So, they are 8″ in the front and around 12″ in the back (maybe 12.3″).

The forever-air tires will never go flat, because they are filled with lightweight foam instead of air. The front wheels are swivel but can be locked straight for tougher terrain.

BRAKE

The hand brake has been updated and now is located directly on the handlebar instead of on the side of the frame. The cool thing about this hand brake is that you can use it to reduce the speed of your stroller when you are going down the hill by slightly squeezing the lever.

FOLD/UNFOLD

The fold is easy, but you will need both hands. It’s now 30% more compact than the older model. Both seats can now be folded in half, whereas before, the seat was one molded piece that stayed open.

Much easier to keep the seat fabric clean and damage-free. We all know strollers get thrown around a lot. LOL. To make it more compact, you can take the seat and the rear wheels off the stroller.

It is worth mentioning that you CAN fold the stroller with both seats attached. With one seat the folded dimensions are around 30″L x 26″W x 12.5″H.

Even in double mode, this stroller has great stability and even with one of the seats empty, it will not flip over.  If you add a second child, it is best to put the heavier child closer to you.

Cons

-No accessories included. While I am happy there are a bunch of accessories available for purchase, I am a little disappointed none of them are included. I would like to see a bumper bar and a cup holder included.

Video Review

Here is a video overview from Baby Jogger.

Here is a quick overview of the main features by Baby Gizmo.

Here is a quick video comparing old City Select vs City Select Lux. Note: they forgot to mention two main features which are the jump seat and a huge shopping bag.

Recent Updates

-New material. The material used to be a little rough and scratchy, but now it’s soft and plush. I am very happy about this.

-New wheels design. The wheels have been redesigned and now have new rims, but are still foam-filled. The rear wheels did look a little larger, but I don’t have the exact dimensions.

-Handlebar. The cover of the handlebar is still rubber, but the shape and the height have been updated. Not it adjusts from 38.5″ to 42.5″. So about 1″ higher than before. The shape is a little more squire.

-Hand brake. It still has a hand brake instead of a foot brake, but it’s now located right on the handlebar instead of the frame. You can also use it to decelerate when going down the hill.

-All-wheel suspension. Before there used to be only front-wheel suspension.

-Automatic lock. Much better than the manual lock on the old version.

-20 seat combinations. There used to be 16 seating combinations, but with the addition of the jump seat, there are 4 more.

-New jump-seat. The new jump seat (sold separately) goes instead of the main seat turning the stroller into the sit-n-stand type of a stroller. It also comes with a footrest.

-New shopping bag. If a large basket is not enough for you, you can purchase a huge shopping bag that goes in the front of the stroller instead of the second seat. This shopping bag reminds me of a bag we see on Bugaboo Donkey.

-New adapters. So the adapters for the second seat have been updated. There used to be two holes for the adapters in the frame that were covered with caps when not used and you had to push two buttons on the side of the frame to remove the adapters.

Now, they have these elegant openings in the frame that close as soon as you remove the frame. No covers!

-30% more compact fold. The fold has been reduced by 30%. Now the seat can be folded in half making the stroller much more compact than before. It also protects the fabric of the seat from damage and dirt.

  1. Hello. Thanks for the great reviews. Having a second in July/August. My son will just turn two. What would you recommend between the B-ready and City Select? Only way I would consider the Uppababy Vista is if we got a used at a big discount. I already splurged on a Armedilla Flip XT on my first pregnancy.

  2. Does the new city select luxe retail for $630 as A double stroller or as a single stroller. We are in decision making whether we should purchase the double city select or the new luxe. Both prices range the same. Except for sure the city select comes as a double at $630-$699.

  3. Hi, i currently have a britax b ready and will soon be purchasing a city select to replace it. Why? Because while it is a fantastic stroller for many reasons, the second seat is a huge drawback for me. The second seat faces forward only and has limited view, my 2 year old is very content when he is in the upper seat because he can see but hates being on the bottom seat and will scream and fuss because of his limited visibility. It can be tricky putting child in and taking them out of the second seat, its a tight squeeze and needs to be noted that because of weight and balance, it is recomended that the second seat be unloded first and loaded last so the stroller doesnt flip. Putting an infant seat on the bottom is tight and if you get the 2017 it too only faces forward. It is a tight fit as well especially if you are not using a britax infant seat, where you need to use the universal adaper as well. The britax second seat is only rated for 35 pounds where the city select is 45. I enjoyed my britax as a single and as a car seat caddy bit everytime i have used it for miltiple children i have run into some type of problem. Im hoping to get the 2017 of the city select Lux after a lot of research and after playing with a 2016 for a few days. Good luck!

  4. Do you think this would be a good option for 1 child? I’m expecting my last baby and can’t decide on a stroller I really do love the nuna mixx but so hard to find options here in Canada

  5. Hi. So quick question about the smaller fold. Is the only reason it’s a smaller fold because of the folding seats? Is the actual frame that the seats attach ton still the same size? Thanks!

  6. I have a set of twins that I have been using the City Select with and have LOVED it! They are 4 now and are very capable of walking, but we have another on the way, and I’m wondering if the lux has an option to carry 3 at one time. Is it possible to have a standup board with two seats maybe? This looks great though! Love that the seats fold up so small! Thank you!

  7. Do you know if the kick board that worked with the 2015 would work with the new 2017?

  8. For the new Baby Jogger City Select LUX Stroller 2017 , Buy-Buy-Baby has it on display in one of their stores. The hand brake deceleration only works on the left rear tire causing the stroller to veer left when operated. When locked, the hand brake stops both rear tires. When asked, Buy-Buy-Baby indicated they built the stroller correctly but they only assembled it that morning. Is the hand brake supposed to decelerate both rear tires?

  9. Yes, the glider board that works on previous City Select models and on the City Mini will work on the Lux.

  10. Yes, the car seats it works with are the same. There is on new adapter, but not for a Chicco seat.

  11. Hello – I’m expecting my first baby and purchased this stroller. I’m confused with how the car seat adapters work. Does the Baby Jogger City Select Car Seat Adaptor Single – Multi Model work on the Lux version, or is there an adaptor specifically for the Lux model. Sorry, I’m a first-time mom and have no idea how these adaptors work!

  12. Hi there!
Do you know if the jump seat will work the city select? We bought our city select in 2016?

  13. In configurations, can the bassinet be placed on top, facing inward, with the toddler seat in the lower position facing outward?

  14. A con to the stroller is that the handlebar is higher! This is a big deal for petite moms who already struggle with handlebars being tall on most strollers. I’m just not sure I can buy this stroller because of that!

  15. Hi…will the stroller board work with the Lux model even with the double seats installed?

    Thanks

    Michelle
